Greta Garbo“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” – Coco Chanel (Venus in Leo)

“When you stop putting yourself on the line and you don’t touch your own heart, how do you expect to touch other people?” – Tori Amos (Venus in Leo)

If you were born when Venus was in the constellation of Leo, the Lion…

Old astrology texts like to call Leo a Drama Queen or King. They like to paint planets in the sign of Leo as folks with superiority complexes. This happens occasionally, but mostly it doesn’t. Leo is the sign of Royalty, and royalty, the kind that stays in power, doesn’t lord over others. True royalty is generous, humane and often quietly dignified. Born with the expressive dignity of a Queen or King, you have creative dominion over an artistic field… and the hearts of others. Coming home from our camping trip in King’s Canyon in June, I visited a ‘Big Cat’ Reserve. As we toured the facility and were educated, the lions, panthers and leopards, lazily lounged in the hundred degree heat. Despite the wire cages, it was clear who was in command: the Cats. Confident, alert, relaxed -they were the main show, watching us watching them.

When I got home I looked at little Obi, my house cat with big cat energy, in a new way. I better understood his nature. When he corners scorpions, plays cat and mouse with mice, and tours the territory of our property like a warden looking for parolees, my cute cuddly cat turns big and fierce, territorially claiming his space. When I want him to be a teddy bear, he plays when he feels like playing. With his playful bites and mews, regal Obi tells me enough when he’s had enough. This cat demands respect. In fact, every cat household knows who is really in charge: the cat and the cat gets his way because the cat is utterly comfortable in it’s way. It’s as though he were born knowing exactly what to do, to be a cat. No ambiguity, no self-questioning, supple natural-ness is the Cat’s first skin. Like Leo, the Cat lives without apologies, second-guessing and worry about his reviews. About what you think, the cat is unconcerned. If only we humans knew how to do that… Read more

Saturn has been transiting my Twelfth House for almost the full 2 ½ years and it’s taken me that long to write a blog about this incredibly mysterious and profound transit. What is time though? This is the Twelfth House House where minutes turn into days, years into minutes. When Saturn, the planet that gives authority and structure to the days of our lives, and self-governance to our ego, the planet who normally greases the wheels of our day-to-day with a relative level of predictability, transits this watery house of disillusionment, ghosts & retreat, time melts and the rules of the game change. We wrestle with illusion that we are in control (and lose). We make plans and have them dissolve, or never come together. It is, after all, not called the house of beginnings, but the house of loss. We lose steam. We lose momentum. We lose touch with the pleasures that once brought us joy — or did they? Venus is exalted in Pisces, the natural ruler of the 12th House. When sober Saturn takes up residence in the Twelfth House, empty or overly ritualized pleasures cease to please. Read more

One year around Christmas time I decided to perform a Saturnalia ritual. Saturnalia was a Roman festival involving presents, revelry, and a little bit of bad behavior including the uncanny reversal of the established social order: for a period of time slaves would become their masters and masters would become their slaves. It was a devilishly good fun time, but only for a time. Sources say the social order wasn’t entirely subverted (potentially causing an uprising, not Saturn’s style) when apropos to the two faced planet, masters would take a turn at serving their slaves, then return to their respective roles. At that time, I was feeling terribly enslaved. I had a Horrible Boss, chronic back pain and I was Alone. I was however living in a small studio that I affectionately called L’Hermitage. It was the kind of magical hovel only magical hobbits live in.  Capricorn rules my Fourth House; my inner Hermit loved her hovel.

The ritual, inspired by Christmas blues and being down in the dumps, was my own personal reminder that all of my ‘problems’ were mine by choice—I could walk away from any or all of them. My job? Nah, I didn’t want to leave it, not yet anyhow. My alone-ness? I’d rather be alone than with someone I didn’t love. The back pain wasn’t a choice, but I was working on healing it. Some involved commitments I had consciously undertaken, some I hadn’t and I was trying to respond to the best of my ability, but none were outside my realm of power. Read more

In my solar return Venus is Ascendant. Thus, in addition to receiving awesome gifts; a kick a** purse and gorgeous shoes for my birthday, my love mailbag has been brimming with questions. A friend wrote me last Thursday, right before the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Cancer: I’ve got Cancer on the cusp of 2nd house. I need security, relationship and relating, intimacy and nurturing. Actual physical presence (nourishment) of humans (i.e. partner!). These are the days of progressed Venus exactly conjunct my Sun, too. Aphrodite is aching to be seen and met! When Venus joins our natal Sun by progression we are ready to meet new friends, rowdy conspirators and soul mates… and progressed Venus wants to broadcast her sonar signal to all of our soul mates, near and far. Anything we can do during this time, enchantments, body image work, self-esteem work and self-love, can and will amplify our attractive powers (No, you don’t need a Venus progression to do these things- just intention & readiness).
